John has been a teacher for 39 years. He is an Assistant Principal: Religious Education at St Thomas More College, Sunnybank. In 2016/2017 he was a member of the Expert Writing Team that worked on the Study of Religion (SoR) Syllabus for the new Queensland Certificate of Education and is involved in the implementation of the Syllabus.

He is currently the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority State Panel Chair for SoR. He teaches in the School of Education at UQ: a Study of Religion teaching elective, and an elective subject World Religions and Youth Culture.

He is an executive member of the Australian Association for Religious Educators and has, in this capacity, been involved in the facilitating of numerous professional development opportunities for teachers in Queensland schools. He is also the secretary / treasurer of the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League which hosts the Confraternity Carnival each year.
