Mike Tyler is currently the Queensland Education Department’s Principal Education Officer responsible for the Arts, in particular music education.

From 1985 – 1998 Mike was on part-time staff of the School of Music at the University of Queensland. In 2005 he was appointed by the Minister for Education as chair of the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Queensland Advisory Committee and as a Federal Director of AMEB Ltd. He has been the Chair of the Federal Board since 2013.

He is also a Board member of the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition and Festival.

In July 2017, Mike was awarded the highest honour of the internationally renowned Maryborough Music Conference, being made its fourth patron.

In December 2017, at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago, Mike was presented with the prestigious International Award for his international contribution to instrumental music education.
